Description of volunteer opportunities:
Looking for "Citizen Scientists" that would like to help us survey for the threatened Florida Scrub-Jays on Friday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 24th, 2012 from 7:30 am to noon at Buck Lake Conservation Area near Mims. Pick one, two or all three days to participate. No experience necessary. Just contact me and I'll send you all the information.
We do this every year, so if you can't make it this time, contact me to get on the list for next year!

It's coming up on that time of year again time to see how our Florida scrub-jays are doing! Once per year we round up volunteers and survey two properties, Lake Monroe Conservation Area and Buck Lake Conservation Area, to see how many jay families and individuals we have. This is part of the statewide Jay Watch initiative. Do not worry if you do not know how to survey for a scrub-jay, or even how to identify one, we will gladly show you. This is a large undertaking that cannot happen without the help of many volunteers on both sites. If you are receiving this message, it means you have either participated in one of our surveys before (and therefore know how much fun they are!), you may know folks who would be interested in participating, or you have expressed interest in joining us for one of our surveys.
I have attached a flier that explains a bit about Jay Watch. Feel free to pass it out to ALL your friends, coworkers, and birding colleagues! If you would like to attend a Jay Watch training class, either for the first time or as a refresher, there will be one at Lyonia Preserve in Deltona on June 2nd, but this is not required to participate in the surveys.
This year's surveys will take place Friday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 24th from 7:30 am to noon each day on both properties. As always, you are free to participate in as many or as few of the 3 days as you wish on either property or both. I have attached maps of both property locations so you can choose your site(s). If you are interested in participating, please email me with your name, the date(s) you'd like to take part, which property, and a contact phone number (preferably a mobile number in case we have any last minute changes or bad weather). I will provide more details on what to bring, where we meet, etc. later to those folks who tell me they'd like to join us.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at this email address or via phone at the numbers listed below. Hope to see many of you on the properties!
As always, if you do not wish to continue receiving these emails, please let me know and I will remove you from this email list.
